Some of the best ways that software development-minded individuals help the WordPress community is by contributing to “core” – or the foundational codebase that powers the millions of blogs around the world.
But even if you don’t have a background in software development let that not scare you from making an attempt! And, it’s not that hard, as Dave Martin shares at a recent WordCamp Raleigh event.
Just imagine the impact that you would have and the millions of people who would be eternally grateful for your service and work? If that gets you cooking then you should definitely consider reviewing Dave’s presentation here and get crackin’!
He’s provided slides below as well so you have very little excuse, right?
Right!
Have you contributed to core? What have your contributions been? And if you haven’t, have you ever considered it? It would be a killer way to give back.

I know it’s a bit late, but I just came across this post. I just wanted to say I attended WordCamp Raleigh back in November and went to Dave’s talk. Shockingly it was not as crowded as I thought or that Dave probably hoped, but it was really great presentation for getting the very basics down(because other dev talks sometimes skip the basics for configuring things).
I’ve always been interested in at least attempting to contribute to core, but was never able to read from the codex how to get the set up just right with svn and the command line etc. Fortunately for me, this talk didn’t have the full room I thought it would, and after the presentation I finally got the stones to ask for help.
I’m fairly certain Dave could obviously tell I was fumbling a little by my question. He then proceeded to spend the next 35-40 minutes with me waiting for missing pieces to download until I was fully set up. After all that he even went over a few basics from the presentation to make sure I got it. I’m very thankful and grateful. Moving forward I hope to make even small contributions for future releases.
that’s fantastic to hear! will you be adding to core in 3.6?
Hoping to for sure, it’s a goal of mine for 2013. I’m more front-end by nature, but now at least I’m setup to make attempts/mistakes/contributions where in the past I was a little off with my setup.
